No-exam life insurance

When accelerated underwriting applies, how the process unfolds, and what happens if you don't qualify for it.

Several carriers use accelerated underwriting: within age and coverage limits, they make underwriting decisions based on your application answers, prescription records, driving history, and other available data, bypassing the paramedical exam. Decisions sometimes arrive within hours. Every quote shown here specifies whether the carrier will require, might require, or will waive a medical exam.

What it changes

No exam does not equal no scrutiny. Underwriting still happens—your answers get verified, and policies issued based on false information can be challenged in the first 24 months. If the carrier's records turn up concerns, they may request an exam or labs anyway; you'll have the choice to proceed or withdraw.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, applicants around 60 or younger, requesting amounts within the carrier's accelerated guidelines, with no significant health events and no tobacco in the past year or longer qualify. Some carriers will take lab work from a recent doctor visit instead of ordering a new exam.

Should an exam be needed, a paramedical specialist typically visits your Visalia-area home or workplace for 20-30 minutes at no charge to you. For many applicants in good health, the exam results can actually improve your rate class, making it less of a hurdle than it may sound.
